Wood Metal Plastic does Milano

Michael Marriott

14–19 April 2024

During the Milano Design Week 2024 Michael Marriott brought his WoodMetalPlastic collection of useful objects to Milan for the first time. Renowned for their simplicity, humor, and creative design, his works are inspired by a deep-seated passion for nature and curiosity about the complexity of structures rather than transient trends of green capitalism.

Michael Marriott is a British designer rooted in East London, with his journey originating in London and continuing through studies at the London College of Furniture before advancing to the Royal College of Art, where he later imparted knowledge as a professor. Marriott has collaborated with entities such as SCP, ICA, Design Museum, Venice Biennale, Established & Sons, VG&P, and Paul Smith, engaging across various fields, including objects, furniture, interiors, exhibitions, installations, and publications. His designs transcend the typical currents of the design industry and remain uninfluenced by consumer trends.

A few months back, we had the pleasure of enjoying an English breakfast tea at Michael Marriott’s charming studio in Dalston, London. When you enter Michael Marriott’s studio, you will be surrounded by an eclectic mix of objects. An ironing board hangs from the ceiling, an attractive yellow cleaning basket lamp, and shelves overflowing with tools, treasures, and odds and ends.

There are boxes of screws, piles of tape, and bottles of paint, along with a curious pile of so many empty tahini bottles just waiting for future projects. In an adjacent room, shelves are lined with art and design books that reflect Marriott’s diverse interests. It is a space where creativity thrives and sparks exploration and inspiration amidst organised chaos.
